Market Insights

Robotic nurse assistants or robotic nursing, also known as “Carebots,” is the use of autonomous mobile robots that are designed and programmed to perform tasks related to assisting (but not replacing) nurses in hospitals, care facilities, or even people’s homes for the treatment and medical care of people, especially the elderly and physically disabled ones. Robotic nurses are also used for performing several routine tasks, such as collecting blood sugar and measuring pressure levels.

Over the past few decades, there have been great advancements in technology, which now are easily accessible and possess several benefits. In many of the technologically advanced regions, the population is living longer and bearing fewer children, leading to an increase in the elderly population.

Japan is said to be the oldest nation in the world. According to the World Bank database, 27% of Japan’s population was over the age of 65 in 2016. In the United States, the population aged 65 and older accounts for 15% of the total (2016), while in Europe, it accounts for 20% of the total (2016). These numbers are presumed to rise in the near future, and it would thus be difficult to maintain the ratio of caregivers to the geriatric population.

CTA Design Element 3

High patient-to-nurse ratios and factors such as long shifts, mandatory overtime, a lack of experienced staff, and inadequate time to monitor patients have been associated with poor health outcomes such as falls, fractures, skin breakdown, and death among patients, as well as back and shoulder injuries among nursing staff.

A robotic nurse assistant has been developed to avoid such risks and reduce patient-to-nurse ratios. Robotic nursing is used for a variety of tasks, including cognitive assistance for elderly patients, interaction with patients, reducing the frequency of personal visits, monitoring patients and gathering patient data, and assisting patients with daily tasks in the case of arthritis or severely obese patients.

The first robotic nursing system in 2009 was developed by Hstar Technologies and named RoNA in Japan. It focused on developing a human-safe and robotic heavy-lifting system that can function in any clinical environment.

Advantages of RoNA:

RoNA can move in any direction, work in confined spaces, and navigate areas; it can work side by side with a trained nurse or be supervised by a remotely located nurse while working with a less trained attendant. It is an intelligent learning system that is able to sense the center of gravity during the patient lift and automatically adjust, thus ensuring patient safety. The RoNA system will eliminate the need for lifting patients during bed transfers, thus avoiding caregiver strain and injuries.

RoNA is under development to address various technologically updated challenges, such as moving bariatric patients and casualty extraction.

Robotic Nursing Assistant-Geographic Analysis

The market for nursing care robotics is the largest in Japan, where it currently accounts for JPY 16.7 billion, which is 4.5% of the service robotics sector in 2015. It is presumed that this figure would approximately increase by more than three times to JPY 54.3 billion in 2020 and even up to JPY 404.3 billion in 2035. Europe also shows an increase in the development of robotic nurses. The rest of the regions are expected to have a higher potential for future growth in the robotic nursing assistant market, as there is a general trend toward an increase in the geriatric population, which would necessitate more assistance from caregivers.
