Market Insights

A central venous catheter, also known as a central line catheter or central venous access device (CVAD), is a long, thin, hollow plastic tube that is inserted into a large vein of the neck or chest to administer fluids, nutrients, medicine, and blood products. The WHO reported that new cases of cancer in 2012 14.1 million, which is predicted to rise further and consequently increase the economic burden. Other chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, which is becoming more common in the elderly, would also drive the venous catheter market. It is beneficial for patients with chronic diseases who require long-term intravenous therapy. The rise in chronic disease prevalence, particularly in the geriatric population, and the increasing reliance on parenteral nutrition are driving the growth of the central venous catheter market. Patients with central venous catheters are prone to bloodstream infections, further increasing the treatment cost. As central venous catheterization is associated with adverse events that are hazardous to patients and expensive to treat, this may hamper the growth of the market.

The report titled “Central Venous Catheter Market: Growth, Future Prospects, and Competitive Analysis, 2017–2025” offers strategic insights into the overall central venous catheters market, along with the market size and estimates for the duration of 2015–2025. Based on the type of product, the global central venous catheters market is segmented as follows:

  • Tunneled Catheters
  • Non-tunneled Catheters

Between the two product types, non-tunneled catheters occupy a larger revenue share. In the tunneled catheter type, one end is inserted surgically into a vein in the chest or neck and passed under the skin, and the other end remains outside the skin. Through this opening end of the catheter, medicine and nutrition are administered. Tunneled catheters reduce the incidence of infection due to the distance between the entry site and the skin outlet. At the same time, non-tunneled catheters are inserted by percutaneous venipuncture through the subclavian vein or internal jugular vein. In non-tunneled catheters, the risk of infection is higher as compared to other central venous access devices, as there is no sub-tunneling.

Based on the type of design, the global central venous catheters market is segmented as follows:

  • Single Lumen
  • Double Lumen
  • Multi Lumen

Multi-lumen catheters occupy the largest revenue share amongst all product types due to their advantage over single-lumen products. A single or multiple lumens are chosen depending on the clinical needs of the patient. For patients who need an infusion into a large central vein, a single-lumen catheter is used. It consists of a tube or lumen that is connected with tubing for the administration of medication or fluids and is also used for intermittent infusions. A single-lumen catheter is used for blood sampling, venous pressure monitoring, and the administration of medicines and fluids. Multiple lumens are commonly used to avoid the need for multiple central venous catheter sites. It has multiple color-coded outlets to identify different lumens. The number varies from two [S1] to four. Different ports are used for different purposes, such as the administration of medications, blood sampling, blood infusions, fluid replacement, and pressure monitoring.

Based on the type of composition, the global central venous catheters market is segmented as follows:

  • Polyurethane
  • Polyurethane/Polycarbonate
  • Silicone

Among the types of composition in catheters, polyurethane dominates the central venous catheter market. When compared with silicone, polyurethane is a new material that is more stiff and strong. Due to the strong material, the walls are thin and have a large lumen diameter, maintaining the same outer diameter of the catheter. The coefficient of friction is lower in polyurethane and can be used with conventional stainless steel guidewires, while silicone exhibits a high coefficient of friction. For one year, silicone, which is soft and biocompatible, has been used safely in the vascular system. Silicone catheters tend to reduce mechanical stability. It is usually used in long-term devices, though temporary or short-term devices are also used. Though polyurethane is more prone to catheter-related infection and is affected by thrombosis, that might hamper the central venous catheter market.

The global central venous catheters market is classified geographically for the purposes of this study as follows:

  • North America (U.S. and Canada)
  • Europe (U.K., Germany, and the Rest of Europe)
  • Asia Pacific (China, Japan, and the Rest of APAC)
  • Latin America (Brazil, Mexico, and the Rest of Latin America)
  • Middle East and Africa (United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the rest of the Middle East, and Africa)

At present, North America dominates the global market for central venous catheters, followed by Europe. The factors driving the growth of the central venous catheter market in North America are the rise in the incidence of cancer and chronic diseases such as cardiovascular conditions, technological advancement, established healthcare infrastructure, and evolving reimbursement policies. The European market is governed by the rise of the geriatric population, technological enhancement, and a high adoption rate for novel products. Asia Pacific is anticipated to be the next fast-growing regional market. Asia, Africa, Central America, and South America, with their huge population bases, are home to almost 60% of the new incidence of cancer cases, and there is a rise in chronic diseases, which act as major factors for the growth of the central venous catheter market.
